North Dakota short line takes over South Dakota-crossing track

Dakota Missouri Valley & Western Railroad Inc. (DMVW) recently received Surface Transportation Board approval to lease from Marshall County Regional Railroad Authority (South Dakota Railroad Authority) and operate 72 track miles between Aberdeen, S.D., and Geneseo Junction, N.D.

DMVW, which operates 460 track miles between Max and Hankinson, N.D., had planned to begin operating the line by early September, according to an STB filing.

South Dakota Railroad Authority recently acquired 22 track miles in Sargent County, N.D., from Rutland Line Inc., and last year purchased 50 track miles between Aberdeen, S.D., and the North Dakota border from Burlington Northern Santa Fe — lines that were out of operation the past two years because of damage caused by 1990s floods.

The authority, which combined the lines to attract new agricultural markets for adjacent farmers and communities along the route, recently chose DMVW to lease and operate the state-crossing track.
