Northern Virginia Transportation Commission (NVTC) recently released a guide that cites funding needed for area transit projects.
During the next six years, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is expecting a $1.5 billion funding shortfall and Virginia Railway Express will need $100 million to purchase rail cars, according to the guide. Northern Virginia’s 2020 transportation plan also shows a $25 million transit funding shortfall.
Since fiscal-year 2001, NVTC’s local governments have increased subsidies 41 percent, while state aid has grown only 15 percent, according to NVTC.
