Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
The Northern Virginia Transportation Commission continues to push for a dedicated transit funding source at the state level. Now, it has even more ammunition to support its cause. Between fiscal years 2002 and 2006, regional and local transit agencies posted double-digit ridership growth.
During the five-year period, ridership rose 17 percent to 137 million; average weekday trips increased 14 percent to 463,353 and passenger miles traveled jumped 20 percent to 868 million. The ridership figures include data provided by regional rail systems, such as Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Metrorail and Virginia Railway Express, as well as local bus systems.
