Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Yesterday, the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) approved a plan to collect seven taxes and fees to help fund transportation projects.
The fees — which include a motor vehicle rental tax, regional registration and initial vehicle registration fees, and an auto repair sales tax — will generate more than $300 million annually in transportation revenue. It’s the first infusion of transportation dollars in the region in more than 20 years, NVTA said.
The taxes and fees will help fund 22 initial public transit, multi-modal and road projects. The authority plans to allocate $6 million to upgrade signs at 20 Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Metrorail stations, $3.7 million for new Virginia Railway Express locomotives and $3.5 million to improve platforms at the West Falls Church and Vienna Metrorail stations.
