In November, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) totaled 109.1, a 1 percent decrease compared with October’s index and the TSI’s first month-over-month decline since August, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

The index — which dropped 2.1 percent compared with November 2005 — also reached its second-lowest level since August 2004 and marked the second-lowest November TSI since 2003. During 2006’s first 11 months, the index fell 1.2 percent compared with the same 2005 period.

November’s Freight TSI of 107.6 decreased 1.4 percent compared October’s level — the index’s fifth decline in six months and lowest level since January 2004. The TSI also dropped 4.1 percent compared with November 2005’s index.

November’s Passenger TSI of 111.0 decreased 0.3 percent compared with October’s level, marking the first decline after two-straight monthly increases. However, the index rose 1.1 percent compared with November 2005.

The TSI is a measure of month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire transportation industries, including rail, air, truck, inland waterways, pipelines and local transit.
