The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) recently approved construction authorization from the Ohio Rail Development Commission directing the Chicago, Fort Wayne & Eastern Railway (CFE) to install flashing lights and roadway gates at a grade crossing in Van Wert.

CFE must submit site plans and cost estimates for the project to PUCO by Jan. 20, 2011. Funding will be covered by federal dollars. Norfolk Southern Railway will be responsible for completing the upgrades by Oct. 22, 2011, according to PUCO.

Meanwhile, the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) Rail Division recently completed improvements at two crossings.

The division revised crossing signals and installed gates at a CSX Transportation crossing in Rocky Mount. The $214,497 project was covered by federal funds and maintenance costs will be divided equally between the state and CSXT.

The division also revised crossing signals and installed gates at a CSXT crossing in the town of Council. Federal funds covered 90 percent and state funds, 10 percent of project costs, which totaled to $184,959. Maintenance costs will be divided equally between the state and CSXT.

The projects are part of NCDOT’s statewide program aimed at enhancing highway safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public grade crossings.
