CSX Intermodal recently contracted OmniTRAX Inc. subsidiary Quality Terminal Services to operate its 59th Street intermodal terminal in Chicago.

Quality Terminal Services will coordinate rail-car loading and unloading, terminal coordination and management of the 132-acre facility, which includes seven loading/unloading tracks and more than 2,000 parking spaces, and annually handles about 300,000 lifts.

"Increasing our intermodal-terminal operations are a key component of our
expansion plans," said OmniTRAX Chief Operating Officer Gary Rennick in a prepared statement.

OmniTRAX — a short-line holding company that manages and operates several Chicago-area properties, including Chicago Rail Link and two locomotive refurbishment and maintenance facilities — currently switches locomotives for CSXI in Bedford Park, Ill., and for Manufacturers' Junction Railway L.L.C.

"We expect to increase lifts through an aggressive growth strategy," said Jim Caron, OmniTRAX vice president of intermodal services. "Our partnership [with CSXI] can only increase the intermodal traffic in the Chicago area."
