Yesterday, Operation Lifesaver (OL) honored two people with national safety awards highlighting individual achievements in preventing deaths and injuries around tracks and trains. The awards were presented during a dinner for the 16th Operation Lifesaver Symposium and Training Seminars in Baltimore.

Mike Glenn of Snellville, Ga., received the Champion Award for incorporating rail safety education into a youth sports program for the hearing impaired. A former NBA player and television sports analyst, Snell is a “celebrity spokesperson” for OL in Georgia and also discusses rail safety in national speaking engagements.

Don Matlock of Hamilton, Mont.; Sandy Brown of Casa Grande, Ariz.; and Captain Jim Kveton of Elmhurst, Ill., received honorable mention for the Champion Award for their efforts on behalf of OL, according to a press release.

Created this year, the Champion Award recognizes an individual who has contributed “significantly” to the overall OL mission in any of the three “E” components of rail safety: education, enforcement or engineering.

Meanwhile, Sergeant First Class Brian Hakey of Southport, N.C., received the F. Tom Roberts Memorial Volunteer Award for expanding the OL program in Southeast North Carolina and making OL’s messages available to all branches of the military. A certified OL presenter since 1998, Hakey also is a certified grade crossing collision investigation instructor and the OL area coordinator for the southeast section of North Carolina.

Since relocating to the Wilmington, N.C., area in 2005, Hakey has quadrupled the number of certified presenters in the region. He also has increased awareness of safety around train tracks throughout the armed forces by providing information on Army Knowledge online, a web-based collaboration site in the U.S. Department of Defense network, according to OL.

Created in 1994 in memory of a man who “dedicated the majority of his life to reducing or eliminating death and injuries along rail tracks,” the F. Tom Roberts Memorial Award honors an individual who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to safety in the number of volunteer hours committed to OL annually, the nature of volunteer activities performed and other personal contributions, according to a press release.
