Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
The Ottawa City Council recently awarded a $579.1 million contract to a consortium comprising Siemens Canada Ltd., PCL Constructors Canada Inc. and Dufferin Construction to design and construct the North-South Light-Rail Transit Project. The contract also includes a 15-year maintenance agreement.
To begin in fall, the $689 million project calls for extending the Ottawa light-rail line from the University of Ottawa, through downtown, to the Barrhaven Town Centre. Scheduled to be complete in 2010, the 18.3-mile line will include 23 stations.
The project will be funded through $400 million in federal and provincial grants, gas tax revenue and development charges.
