PATH celebrates a century of service
advertisement
Today, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) system by offering free rides.
The Hudson and Manhattan Railroad first opened the heavy-rail system in February 1908; PANYNJ took over the system from the bankrupt railroad in 1962. Today, annual ridership averages about 67 million.
PANYNJ currently is in the midst of a $3.3 billion, 10-year PATH expansion and modernization program that calls for replacing the entire current fleet and adding more cars, upgrading all stations and lengthening trains on the Newark-to-World Trade Center line.
