Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Patriot Rail Corp. is branching out into the communications business. The short-line holding company entered into a three-year agreement with SBA Communications Corp. to identify rail property sites for communication towers.
The agreement calls for SBA to construct, own and operate code-compliant, multi-tenant communication towers on Patriot Rail-owned sites, as well as on any rights of way acquired by Patriot Rail. SBA also will manage and market wireless communications infrastructure handled by SBA subsidiary AAT Communications L.L.C. Patriot Rail, which owns rights of way totaling 212 miles, retains the right to develop similar opportunities with other short-line operators.
"This agreement allows us to expand our business model by generating income from non-operating property and provides our railroads with enhanced communications for safer operations," said Patriot Rail Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Gary Marino in a prepared statement.
Patriot Rail owns and operates the Tennessee Southern Railroad and Butte, Anaconda & Pacific Railway.
