The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently issued 21 grants totaling $20 million to help Class Is, regionals, short lines, shippers and local transportation agencies fund freight-rail infrastructure improvements.

PennDOT administered the grants through its Bureau of Rail Freight, Ports & Waterways, which provides infrastructure funding to Pennsylvania’s 65 railroads.

Among the latest grants, PennDOT provided:
• $2 million to Norfolk Southern Corp. to build a second track and install a traffic-control system at the Port Perry Branch;
• $2 million to Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad Inc. to rehabilitate track serving a power station;
• $1.7 million (in two grants) to Allegheny Valley Railroad Co. to rehabilitate track in its P&W subdivision and upgrade 21 track miles in its W&P subdivision;
• $1.65 million to Pennsy Supply Inc. to build track and a rail loading facility;
• $1.6 million to the SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority to complete track construction and extend rail service to a quarry;
• $1.05 million to the Pennsylvania Northeast Regional Railroad Authority to acquire and rehabilitate 10 track miles;
• $1 million (in two grants) to the Reading, Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad Co. to extend and rehabilitate track to serve a new ethanol facility;
• $850,000 to Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad L.L.C. to continue upgrading a line and extending yard track;
• $700,000 to the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority to build a siding from a CSX Transportation line to a shipbuilding facility;
• $571,218 to Pittsburgh & Ohio Central Railroad Inc. to rehabilitate a branch line;
• $500,000 to River Hill Coal Co. Inc. to rebuild track and add two switches to a siding that connects to a R.J. Corman Railroad line; and
• $346,500 to Susquehanna Rail Works L.L.C. to build track connecting to a NS mainline.
