Pennsylvania DOT provides $4.7 million for freight-rail projects

On Nov. 19, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PENNDOT) released $1.1 million in grants for 10 freight-rail projects.
Since 1995, PENNDOT has distributed more than $120 million in freight-rail assistance grants.
The grants include: $225,750 to Winner Steel Inc.; 156,330 to Valley Distributing and Storage Co.; $145,580 to Pittsburgh and Ohio Central Railroad Co.; and $100,000 to Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad Co.
The grants follow $3.6 million in state capital budget funds PENNDOT released Nov. 14 to help fund rail infrastructure repairs.
Those funds include:
• $1.5 million to Philadelphia, Bethlehem and New England Railroad Co. to
construct an intermodal facility in Bethlehem;
• $750,000 to Reading, Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad Co to replace ties on its Reading mainline;
• $600,000 to Livonia, Avon and Lakeville Railroad to maintain and repair 100 track miles;
• $520,000 to Novolog Bucks County Inc. to rehabilitate primary rail routes and yards in the U.S. Steel Industrial Park; and
• $260,700 to Redevelopment Authority of Luzerne County to realign and rebuild track to return a bridge to service.
