Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf yesterday announced the award of $8.7 million in state funds to Driving PA Forward to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions from freight switcher locomotives as well as tugboats and ferries.
Part of a total $9.5 million package given to Drive PA Forward, the $8.7 million comes from the Marine and Rail Freight Movement Grant Program and will be applied to priority areas, such as those with high population densities and areas designated as “environmental justice,” state officials said in a press release.
Driving PA Forward aims to permanently reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by nearly 28,000 tons.
Rail-related entities receiving funding include US Steel Corp., $4,529,104; Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad Co., $2.9 million; and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, $1.26 million. All three entities plan to replace old diesel-powered switcher locomotives with new electric locomotives to reduce emissions.
“Supporting projects that reduce emissions and pollution is a step in the right direction to ensure a better quality of life for our communities and the environment," Wolf said.
