On July 24, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PENNDOT) announced it had granted more than $4 million under the Rail Freight Assistance Program to help finance 30 projects, including construction, repair and rehabilitation of rail, sidings and grade crossings.


"This program helps improve the operation of our freight railroads, allows them to move goods efficiently and timely, and to retain and create new opportunities for working men and women," said PENNDOT Secretary Allen Biehler in a prepared statement.


Grants include:


• $233,610 to Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad Co. Inc. to rehabilitate two mainlines;

• $205,823 to Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Co. to rehabilitate track and a bridge to return the Clairton Branch to service;

• $158,880 to Oil Creek and Titusville Lines Inc. to rehabilitate track and a bridge deck;

• $157,132 to Gettysburg and Northern Railroad Co. to rehabilitate track and construct a runaround yard track;

• $129,538 to Delaware and Hudson Railway Co. Inc. to rehabilitate 11 track miles and install a signal system;

• $86,670 to The Everett Railroad Co. to repair six crossings; and

• $84,525 to East Penn Railways Inc. to rehabilitate 4.5 track miles and repair a tunnel's lining.
