Yesterday, Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell signed legislation authorizing the commonwealth to boost the Rail Transportation Assistance Program's annual budget from $20 million to $30 million.

The current budget also allocates $3 million for projects aimed at preserving railroad bridges.

The commonwealth's assistance program provides funds for constructing, re-establishing and preserving rail lines, improving rail safety and adding capacity.
