Last week, Maricopa County, Ariz., voters approved a measure proposing the county extend a half-cent sales tax dedicated to transportation another 20 years.

The tax will help the county fund a $15.8 billion plan to extend light rail 27 miles, and improve bus routes, freeways and arterial streets.

Scheduled to begin service in December 2008, the initial 20-mile light-rail line will serve Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa.
