Pioneer Railcorp June 11 sold 33.9 miles of subsidiary Alabama & Florida Railway Co.’s (AF) track to Three Notch Railroad Co. (TNR), a wholly owned subsidiary of Knoxville, Tenn.-based Gulf & Ohio Railways, which owns and operates eight short lines and one scenic railroad.
The $2.5 million sale involves a track segment from Georgianna to Andalusia, Ala.; AF would retain and operate 42.8 miles of track from East Andalusia to Geneva, Ala., interchanging traffic with TNR at Andalusia.
After evaluating the short-line holding company’s geographical preferences and traffic profiles, Pioneer Railcorp officials opted to sell the AF segment, and plan to sell AF’s remaining line by year end.
Peoria, Ill.-based Pioneer Railcorp — owner and operator of 16 short lines and one tourist railroad in 10 states — plans to retain its other Alabama short line, Alabama Railroad Co. (ALAB), which the company has owned since 1991.
ALAB recently rehabilitated two bridges, and plans to replace ties and resurface track in the near future.
