Pittsburgh port authority installs chemical detection devices at light-rail station

The Port Authority of Allegheny County recently installed chemical detection units at Steel Plaza Station — the first such devices to be installed in the authority’s light-rail system.

The agency used a U.S. Department of Homeland Security grant to purchase the devices, which are designed to alert police and other emergency personnel if harmful substances are detected in or near the station.

The authority plans to purchase additional chemical detection devices for the Wood Street and Gateway Center stations.
