The Port Authority of Allegheny County is following through with its budget deficit reduction plans. Yesterday, the authority notified three unions and non-represented employees that it will eliminate 374 positions — which includes laying off 267 workers — on or about June 17 to coincide with a scheduled 15 percent service reduction.

The layoffs will affect 138 operators, 113 represented workers serving in non-operating positions and 16 non-represented employees.

Authority officials notified the Amalgamated Transit Union, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and Port Authority Transit Police Association about the layoffs, which are part of the port authority’s effort to reduce a projected $80 million budget deficit in fiscal-year 2008, which begins July 1.

The agency also will reduce costs by making pension changes, increasing health care contributions, freezing wages and eliminating deferred compensation for senior staff, and implementing one-year wage freezes for all other non-represented employees.
