Pittsburgh port authority to proceed with fare increase, service cuts

On March 1, the Port Authority of Allegheny County plans to raise fares, then reduce service on most rail and bus routes five days later.
The fare and route changes will help the authority make up a multi-million-dollar fiscal-year 2005 operating budget deficit.
In December, the port authority received $4.7 million in additional state funds, enabling the agency to postpone the fare increase, which originally was scheduled to take effect Feb. 1. The authority plans to raise the base fare from $1.75 to $2.
