U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded two grants totaling $40.7 million to the Port Authority of Allegheny County to upgrade and expand its light-rail system.

U.S. DOT will provide a $27.8 million grant for the Pittsburgh Stage II Light-Rail Transit Priority project, designed to modernize a portion of the authority’s 25-mile system. The project includes rebuilding the former Overbrook Trolley Line and portions of the Library Line, and purchasing new light-rail vehicles.

The department also will provide a $12.9 million grant for the North Shore Connector Light-Rail Transit project, which would extend the authority’s system to Heinz Field, Carnegie Science Center and the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
