On Feb. 10, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced plans to award four grants totaling $13.3 million to Pennsylvania transit agencies.

The Port Authority of Allegheny County will receive a $6.9 million grant for its North Shore Connector Light Rail Transit project, designed to increase Pittsburgh-area light-rail service. A 1.2-mile Gateway Line extension would travel between Gateway Center Station and the new Heinz Field football stadium; a 0.3-mile extension would travel between Steel Plaza Station and the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

The Port Authority also will receive a $3.9 million grant to finance Job Access and Reverse Commute projects in southwestern Pennsylvania. Funds will be used to expand transit, and community and employer van services, and other shared ride programs.

The other two grants will enable Westmoreland County Transit Authority and the city of Williamsport to replace buses.
