The Port Authority of Allegheny County recently obtained a $46.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the $386 million Stage II light-rail project that’s designed to re-establish light-rail service between downtown Pittsburgh and the South Hills suburbs.

The grant will reimburse the authority for construction costs to rebuild the Overbrook and Library lines, and purchase new light-rail vehicles and communication equipment.

The authority is modernizing Pittsburgh’s 25-mile trolley network — which was shut down in 1993 — into a light-rail system. The project includes reconstructing the Overbrook, Library and Drake trolley lines, building 2,200 new parking spaces and purchasing 28 light-rail vehicles.

In June, the port authority reopened the Overbrook line.
