President Bush pegs Buttery, Mulvey as potential STB nominees

President George W. Bush recently announced his proposed nominees to fill vacant Surface Transportation Board commissioner positions, according to Association of American Railroads.
The president intends to nominate William Buttrey to serve the remainder of a five-year STB term expiring Dec. 31, 2007, and Francis Mulvey to serve a five-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2008.
Currently a Memphis-based independent consultant, Buttrey previously served Federal Express Corp. as senior government affairs representative and the Senate aviation subcommittee as committee counsel.
Mulvey currently serves as democratic staff director for the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure's Railroad Subcommittee. He previously served the U.S. Department of Transportation as deputy assistant inspector general for rail, transit and special programs, and the U.S. General Accounting Office as assistant director.
Buttrey and Mulvey would succeed former STB Commissioners Linda Morgan and Wayne Burkes, who earlier this year resigned from the board to become a partner in law firm Covington & Burling and campaign to serve as Mississippi treasurer, respectively. STB Chairman Roger Nober has served as sole board member for the past several months. The nominations would be subject to Senate confirmation.
