President Bush signs energy bill backing clean coal technology

Yesterday, President Bush signed into law the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (H.R. 6/S. 10), which includes provisions aimed at improving locomotive fuel efficiency and developing clean coal technology.

The act provides funds for locomotive technology research programs designed to increase fuel economy, reduce emissions and lower operating costs. The legislation also funds and provides incentives for developing clean coal technology to improve coal-burning efficiency, reduce emissions and increase U.S. coal competitiveness.

“Coal is America’s most abundant energy resource. The challenge is to develop ways to take advantage of our coal resources while keeping our air clean,” said Bush in a speech before signing the bill. “The bill I sign today authorizes new funding for clean coal technology so we can move closer to our goal of building the world’s first zero-emission coal-fired power plant.”
