Yesterday, President Bush announced his intention to nominate Joseph Boardman as Federal Railroad administrator.

Boardman currently serves as commissioner of the New York State Department of Transportation. He previously served the department as first deputy commissioner and assistant commissioner for the Office of Public Transportation.

Prior to joining the department, he held stints as chief operating officer of Progressive Transportation Services Inc. and commissioner of public transportation in Broome County, N.Y. Boardman currently chairs the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' (AASHTO) standing committee on rail transportation.

Association of American Railroads President and Chief Executive Officer Edward Hamberger approved the nomination in a prepared statement.

“Boardman is a national leader and visionary in transportation,” he said. “He was the driving force behind [AASHTO’s] ‘Freight-Rail Bottom Line Report,’ a groundbreaking assessment of our nation’s rail infrastructure.”

Robert Jamison has been serving as acting FRA administrator the past two months. He succeeded former Acting Administrator Betty Monro, who retired at 2004’s end.
