President Bush’s proposed fiscal-year 2007 Department of Homeland Security budget would freeze funding for the Targeted Infrastructure Protection program at $600 million.

But that funding level is insufficient to meet transit security needs, which total more than $6 billion, according to the American Public Transportation Association. Association officials also are concerned about how much money will be allocated for transit under the program, which also provides security funding for other transportation infrastructure, including ports.
