Within the next 10 days, Canadian Pacific Railway plans to submit a BC Rail Ltd. operator proposal to British Columbia's provincial government.


"We strongly believe we can leverage our network of rail lines, connections and alliances to meet [B.C. shippers' and communities'] needs, and to achieve sustainable efficiencies for BC Rail," said CPR President and Chief Executive Officer Rob Ritchie in a prepared statement. "We can address the provincial government's requirements of sustainability, competitiveness and growth for BC Rail."


The first railroad to operate in British Columbia, CPR has had a presence in the province for more than 120 years.


On May 15, British Columbia issued a request for proposals seeking a private investor to assume control of the 1,400-mile regional's operations and management. BC Rail's rail beds, rights of way and track would remain provincially owned.
