The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) yesterday released its latest Rail Trends report, which outlines the performance of Canadian railways from 2010 to 2019.
The report includes key highlights of the nation's railways in 2019, which was a "strong year for Canadian railroaders," said RAC President and Chief Executive Officer Marc Brazeau in a press release.
"While setting all-time records in passenger trips, investment and taxes paid to Canadian governments, they continued to deliver in the key areas of safety, innovation, environmental stewardship and growth," Brazeau said.
The report's highlights include the following points:• Canada's railways in 2019 originated 47% more carloads and moved 47% more passengers than they did in 2010;• The nation's freight accident rate has decreased by 20% and the passenger accident rate decreased by 59%; and• Over the past decade, RAC members invested CA$19.5 billion in their networks.
Data for 2020 will be covered in next year's report, RAC officials said.
RAC members transport more than 100 million passengers and more than CA$320 billion worth of goods across Canada annually.
