The Railway Engineering-Maintenance Suppliers Association recently selected five students to receive a $2,000 tuition-only scholarship for the 2005-2006 academic year.

The recipients are:
• Meredith Browne, who’s majoring in secondary education with a math concentration as a freshman at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minn., and is the daughter of Loram Maintenance of Way Inc.’s Thomas Browne;
• Paul Campbell, who’s studying biochemistry as a sophomore at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Kan., and is the son of Unit Rail Anchor Inc.’s Scott Campbell;
• Brandy Criss, who’s majoring in personnel psychology and minoring in communication at Missouri Western State in St. Joseph, and is the daughter of Herzog Contracting Inc.’s Daniel Samford;
• Danielle Gleaton, who’s studying international business and management science as a junior at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, and is the daughter of Harsco Track Technologies’ John Gleaton; and
• Lindsey Ungar, who’s majoring in business and mathematics as a sophomore at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and is the daughter of Detroit Diesel Corp.’s Robin Ungar.

For this year’s scholarship program, applicants answered the following question: “The Staggers Rail Act of 1980 deregulated the rail industry and created a market-driven, cost-effective rail system. Some special interest groups are now calling for re-regulation. Do you think the railroads should be regulated by the federal government? Why or why not?”
