RMI unveils Web-based service for shippers

On Nov. 17, rail information service firm RMI announced the availability of a Web-based service designed to enable shippers to manage rail shipments at any point in time.

ShipperConnect supports real-time decision-making and is designed to "eliminate antiquated procedures and create an efficient process that takes advantage of today's technology," said Paul Pascutti, RMI vice president marketing, in a prepared statement. Users can order cars into the plant, release cars, or weigh, turn, reject, hold or bill cars. Instructions submitted to the railroad automatically populate the work orders for railroad crews, eliminating the cumbersome and error-prone handling of faxed instructions, according to RMI.

For billing of loaded or empty rail cars, the ShipperConnect e-BOL tool facilitates the origination of bills of lading submitted to the railroad in a standard EDI format. With RMI's Freight and Fleet Management Services for shipment tracking, ShipperConnect offers complete origin-to-destination visibility of inbound and outbound rail shipments, according to RMI.

ShipperConnect is available through RMI's RailConnect® Transportation Management Service for yard and inventory control.
