Canadian Pacific Railway and Rail World Inc. subsidiary Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway (MMA) Sept. 30 reached an agreement, under which MMA will acquire lines that CPR previously leased to Quebec Southern Railway.

The U.S./Canadian border-crossing lines would provide MMA access to Montreal and to Bangor & Aroostook's Vermont lines.

Under agreement terms, CPR and MMA created a commercial alliance to enhance the operation and viability of the purchased lines.

"CPR will be our main interchange connection, and we look forward to close cooperation in marketing joint MMA-CPR service through the Montreal gateway," said MMA President Edward Burkhardt in a prepared statement.
