Rail-related projects advance in Indiana, North Carolina

The Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority (RDA) recently accepted a grant application from the Gary/Chicago International Airport concerning the construction of rail bridges for a runway expansion project.
The airport had requested $30 million from the RDA to help fund the $153 million runway expansion. The grant would help fund the construction of a vehicle overpass and two rail bridges so tracks that block the site of the runway expansion — including those used by CN and CSX Transportation — can be relocated.
Meanwhile, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and city of Lexington will hold a public meeting May 3 to obtain public feedback on preliminary alternatives for closing and/or improving two Norfolk Southern Corp. grade crossings to improve safety.
NCDOT contracted Parsons Brinckerhoff to conduct a traffic separation study, which will analyze train and vehicle traffic patterns at the crossings. Alternatives include the installation of additional safety equipment, closures or grade separations. NCDOT and the city plan to incorporate public input into the study and continue to work together to refine alternatives.
NCDOT previously worked with other cities to boost safety by upgrading or adding flashing lights and gates at crossings, relocating or closing crossings, and adding bridges or underpasses for pedestrians and vehicles.
