RailPulse yesterday announced the launch of its technology infrastructure that provides near real-time data and insights across the North American freight rail-car fleet.
The platform leverages GPS and other telematics technologies to monitor the location, condition and health of rail cars in order to enhance safety, efficiency and visibility for rail shippers, railroads and rail-car owners, RailPulse officials said in a press release.
The platform aggregates, enriches and securely stores data from sensors and other sources, delivering the data to users through a web portal and application programming interfaces. A variety of rail-car sensors are accommodated by the platform, including those used for location, movement, load, handbrake, door/hatch status and impact.
Users can set up alerts, geofences and reports to manage their rail-car fleets and shipments, RailPulse officials said.
The launch follows two years of development and testing in collaboration with RailPulse coalition members and telemetry vendors. Funding came from a Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) grant from the Federal Railroad Administration, as well as from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
RailPulse was formed in 2020 by a diverse group of industry leading stakeholders to transform the rail industry by accelerating the adoption of GPS and other telematics technologies delivered through an open-architecture rail-car telematics platform.
RailPulse members include Bunge, Canadian Pacific Kansas City, CSX, GATX Corp., Genesee & Wyoming Inc., Norfolk Southern Railway, Railroad Development Corp., The Greenbrier Cos., TrinityRail, Union Pacific Railroad and Watco.
