Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Last year, the Railroad Cooperation and Education Trust (RAILCET) added five railroad contractors as signatories of the Railroad Transportation and Operation Agreement (RTOA) with help from Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA) and International Union of Operating Engineers officials.
The contractors include Metroplex and DOT Track Services, which added about 270 members to the RTOA workforce as of Jan. 1. RTOA contractors must abide by a labor agreement that includes geographically zoned wage rates.
In 2004, RAILCET also increased monthly manhours worked under the RTOA 14 percent to between 82,000 and 93,500, recruited signatory contractors to bid on projects in non-union areas, such as the southern states, and helped signatories — including Delta Railroad Construction Inc. — obtain bids that might have been awarded to non-signatory contractors.
"Having high-quality rail contractors sign on will further strengthen RAILCET's reputation within the rail industry while also increasing the contract potential for our signatories," said RAILCET Chairman Edward Smith, who also serves as LIUNA's assistant to the general president, vice president and regional manager, in a prepared statement.
Comprising railroad management and rail labor union representatives, RAILCET aims to promote cooperation in all railroad contracting disciplines.
