Last year, surface transportation providers moved cargo valued at more than $790 billion across the U.S., Canadian and Mexican borders, an 11 percent jump in freight value and new annual record, according to updated data recently released by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The value of the 679 million tons of transported freight bested the previous record set in 2004.

Trucks moved more than 62 percent of the freight, which was valued at $491 billion, up 14.3 percent compared with 2004. Railroads moved 15 percent of the cargo, which was valued at $116 billion, up 23.9 percent compared with 2004. Maritime carriers and pipelines each moved 7 percent of the freight and air carriers, 4 percent.

During the past five years, the value of freight moving between the three countries grew at an average annual rate of nearly 4 percent. The annual value of cargo moving between the United States and Mexico, and United States and Canada increased 3.3 percent and 4.2 percent, respectively.
