Railway Tie Association honors former Appalachian Timber Services head Gadd

The Railway Tie Association (RTA) recently presented the Broad Axe Award to Bill Gadd, who retired from wood-tie producer Appalachian Timber Services Inc. in 2001. The award recognizes an individual's contribution to the crosstie industry.

Gadd began his career in the Pennsylvania coal business, but purchased Appalachian Timber Services with a partner in 1988. The company grew to offer wood cross and switch ties, bridge timbers and crossings, and landscaping, relay and tie disposal services. Gadd also launched Strata Management and Strata Products, complementary businesses that eventually merged and produced a patented underground mine roof support system.

A former RTA president for one term, he previously served on the association's executive committee for six years. Since retiring, Gadd has remained active in the wood, coal and gas industries.

"I enjoyed the people — including my competitors &3151; more than anything," said Gadd in the Nov./Dec. issue of RTA's Crossties magazine. "They are all good people, and many of my competitors have become my friends."
