With an eye on developing a multi-products transload facility, New Jersey & Northern Railway L.L.C. officials recently signed a long-term, onsite rail-switching agreement with International Realty Group for the 165-acre former VA Supply Depot in Somersville, N.J.
The 1,000-square-foot site features about 180 car spots and could accommodate the unloading of a 100-car unit train, according to a statement issued by New Jersey & Northern, an affiliate of Raritan Central Railway L.L.C. The site also offers 100 "live" car spots for plastics products; additional rail infrastructure will be built within the next 12 months to accommodate a total of 300 spots.
Located near Interstates 287, 78 and 95, the site can receive 286,000-pound cars and is cleared for high-cube rail cars, including tri-levels.
"Our intention is to develop the site into one of the largest multi-products transload facilities in the country," said Eyal Shapira, New Jersey & Northern's principal owner. "We plan to focus initially on forest products, and steel products that originate on Norfolk Southern Railway, in addition to plastics products."
