Earlier this week, the American Public Transportation Association announced first-quarter public transit ridership was up 3.3 percent compared with data from the same 2007 period. If recent transit agency passenger counts are any indication, ridership continues to grow in the second quarter.

In April, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority recorded average weekday ridership of 1.3 million trips, a 5.5 percent increase compared with April 2007. In 2008’s first four months, ridership rose 6.1 percent, with the largest increases posted on the agency’s subway and bus systems.

Meanwhile, the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority posted yet another monthly ridership record in May. The authority’s Tri-Rail commuter-rail system carried 371,798 passengers, a 22.4 percent increase year over year.

And on June 2, Tri-Rail posted its second-highest ridership day, carrying 16,319 passengers.
