Non-profit local development group the Greater Jamaica Development Corp. recently announced plans to create street-level retail space under MTA Long Island Rail Road’s Jamaica Station.

The $12 million project calls for building 5,300 square feet of retail space at a site across from the station entrance. Construction is scheduled to begin later this year.

In September 2007, the city of New York rezoned 368 blocks in Jamaica as part of a plan to create 3 million square feet of new office, retail and hotel space, and 5,200 housing units.
