Retired UTU Vice President Wotaszak dies

Former United Transportation Union International Vice President Lawrence Wotaszak passed away Nov. 30 in Canton, Mich. He was 72.


In 1955, Wotaszak began his railroad career with Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad (C&O), serving as a yard conductor and later as a conductor.


He joined Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, serving as president and vice president of Lodge 1064 in Grand Rapids, Mich.


In 1958, Wotaszak was elected vice chairperson, and later served as chairperson of the local grievance committee and general chairperson of C&O Lines North.


He was elected UTU alternate vice president in 1975 and vice president in 1978, winning re-elections in 1983, 1987 and 1991. Wotaszak also served UTU as director of its field service department and vice chairperson of a labor committee that addressed issues pertaining to Conrail.


He is survived by his wife Jane, a son and three daughters.
