Yesterday, the Russian Railways and Finnish railway VR Group Ltd. signed an agreement to collaborate on international container freight services.

The companies plan to develop and offer a container train service between Russia and Finland to attract additional freight flows to rail. Russian Railways and VR Group first will set technical, technological and tariff terms for services on the Helsinki-to-Moscow route.

The companies plan to rely on their “large reserves” of throughput capacity, border crossings, new capacity for transporting cars and joint ventures engaged in goods transport, Russian Railways and VR Group officials said in a joint statement.

“The growth of trade-economic relations between Russia and Finland during 2010 was reflected in the volumes of freight in the first 10 months, [which] increased by 14 percent,” said Russian Railways Vice President Vadim Morozov.
