SAB WABCO now is marketing a Life Cycle Service under which the company provides design, platform integration, maintenance and support services for the systems it supplies.

So far, two Italian transit agencies have ordered the serivce. The supplier recently obtained a $7.7 million order from Trenitalia to provide more than 500 spare parts and brake components for the agency’s rail vehicles that are equipped with SAB WABCO’s brake systems. The company plans to deliver the parts by December, but Trenitalia could exercise options for another 2,000 parts.

SAB WABCO also obtained a $6.1 million order to supply spare parts and brake components for Metro Roma during the next three years.

As part of its Life Cycle Service, the supplier also recently introduced a new laser measurement technology designed to take a precise measurement of each wheel’s profile. The laser system detects individual wheels and wheelsets while a train is moves by. Information is transferred directly to a database, where it can be compared with previously collected data to improve the accuracy of wear trend analyses and predictive maintenance planning.

Last month, the city of Berlin began using the technology on its tramway.
