SKF and Knorr-Bremse are teaming up to integrate condition-monitoring functions into Knorr-Bremse's brake-control systems.

The control systems will monitor and gather data from rail-car trucks while a train is in operation to provide early fault detection capabilties and prevent or reduce component failures. Railroads and car owners will be able to employ condition-based maintenance and reduce lifecycle costs, SKF and Knorr-Bremse said.

The monitoring system will feature SKF's IMx-R online train system. SKF and Knorr-Bremse will jointly develop an electronic monitoreing board to record and diagnose rail-car condition data, and integrate the board into Knorr-Bremse's brake-control systems.
