STB allows St. Lawrence & Atlantic to continue leasing New Hampshire lines

Surface Transportation Board Sept. 5 granted 165-mile St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad Co. (SLR) an exemption to continue leasing and operating six track miles (comprising two lines) near Berlin and Gorham, N.H.


The lines now are owned by short line Fraser N.H. L.L.C. (a subsidiary of Fraser Papers Inc.), which recently acquired the track from Berlin Mills Railway Inc. as part of Berlin Mills parent company American Tissue Inc.'s Chapter 11 reorganization.


SLR, a Genesee & Wyoming Inc. subsidiary that operates in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, had leased the lines from Berlin Mills since November 1997.


Following Fraser's acquisition of the lines, SLR and Fraser entered into a 15-year lease agreement that would enable SLR to continue operating the lines to originate and/or terminate traffic, switch and store cars, and build or break up consists.
