Parties interested in commenting on the proposed scope of the Surface Transportation Board's (STB) environmental analysis of the Canadian National Railway Co./ Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway (EJ&E) transaction have more time to do so. The STB has extended the comment deadline to Feb. 15.

CN is seeking regulatory approval to acquire a major portion of the 198-mile EJ&E, which operates a mainline that encircles Chicago and reaches Waukegan, Joliet and South Chicago, Ill., and Gary, Ind. The Class I plans to name the operations the EJ&EW West Co.

Because the proposed acquisition could impact the environment, the STB determined its Section of Environmental Analysis will prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The board is accepting public comments to help determine the EIS' scope.

The STB will accept written comments via mail, an electronic filing posted on the board's Web site at www.stb.dot.gov or by phone at 800-347-0689.
