Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
The Surface Transportation Board (STB) recently awarded a contract to Christensen Associates to conduct a study on the state of rail competition in the United States.
The $1 million study will be completed in fall 2008. Christensen Associates will analyze rail competition and capacity/interplay. The economic and engineering consulting firm also will assess regulatory policy alternatives.
In October 2006, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued a report expressing concerns about rail competition and “captive” rail shippers served by only one railroad. GAO officials recommended the STB conduct a rail competition study and determine ways to address competitive issues.
