STB releases draft environmental review of proposed Alaska Railroad line

Last week, the Surface Transportation Board's (STB) Section of Environmental Analysis (SEA) issued a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (Draft EIS) for the Alaska Railroad Corp.'s (ARRC) proposed 80-mile line between North Pole and Delta Junction.

The "Northern Rail Extension" project would extend ARRC's existing freight- and passenger-rail service to a region south of North Pole. The project calls for building various structures, including a passenger facility, communications towers and sidings.

The Draft EIS analyzes the project's potential environmental impacts and recommends mitigation measures. Next month, the SEA will conduct public meetings in Delta Junction, Fairbanks, North Pole and Salchato, Alaska, to review the project and Draft EIS.

The STB will accept public comments on the Draft EIS until Feb. 2.
