Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
On July 22, the Surface Transportation Policy Project (STPP) plans to release "Transportation Costs and the American Dream," a study ranking 28 metro areas by the amount a family spends on daily transportation costs.
The report will show that American families are spending more of their income on public transportation, and that the poorest families spend the most on transportation, according to STPP.
The U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation and Treasury recently proposed a fiscal-year 2004 budget that would cut reverse-commute program funding — which enables inner-city workers to get jobs in the suburbs — by 40 percent. The proposal also would slash Amtrak funds.
The subcommittee’s proposal would hinder efforts to provide affordable public transportation, STPP said.
